I play a variety of instruments. I started on guitar as a teenager. I learned some keyboard skills along the way and have worked quite a bit with synthesizers and sequencers. I studied voice for two years with Joe Beck, an operatic tenor. It was at this time that I played with a rock band called The Mondello's and occasionally performed with Peter Mayer, singer-songwriter and lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band.
In 1991, I began studying djembe drumming. I have studied with many master drummers from West Africa, including Ladji Camara, Mamady Keita, Famoudou Konate, Abdoul Doumbia, Madou Dembele, Arafale Kone, Sedou Doumbia, Yaya Kabo, Mor Thiam, M'Bemba Bangoura, Djimo Kouyate, Mohammed Da Costa, and Bolokada Conde. I have performed nationally and internationally as a professional djembe drummer with master dancer Diadie Bathily. Currently, I accompany West African dance classes by Karol Ababa at Washington University. I also play with world percussion group Nuclear Percussion Ensemble and with original rock band Madahoochi. I am Music Director for Circus Harmony, the annual gala performances by the professional children's circus at City Musuem. I play guitar and percussion, and compose and arrange all the music.
